AEO for Law Firms – What is it and Why do you Need it?
In the fast-changing world of digital marketing, law firms face new challenges when trying to stand out online. Traditional SEO is no longer enough to ensure your firm is visible in search results. The rise of AI-driven search tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, along with the growing use of voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, means people are finding legal information in new ways.
To adapt, firms must embrace Answer Engine Optimization (AEO); a new layer of search visibility designed for how people now ask questions and consume information. BSD Legal Marketing explains what AEO is, how it works, and why it’s essential for every modern law firm.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the process of optimising your website and online content so it can be accurately understood and used by AI-powered search tools. Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) focuses on ranking web pages in Google’s list of blue links. AEO, on the other hand, focuses on ensuring that your firm’s content is selected by AI-generated answers and voice searches, the new frontiers of digital discovery.
In simple terms, AEO helps your firm’s expertise appear directly in AI tools and voice devices when people ask questions such as:
- “What does a family solicitor do?”
- “How much does conveyancing cost in the UK?”
- “Can I claim for housing disrepair?”
Instead of scrolling through pages of results, users are increasingly getting one spoken or written answer and your goal as a firm is to be that answer.
Why does AEO matter for law firms?
The legal industry is built on trust and authority. When someone needs legal services, they want quick, reliable information. The way users access that information is shifting rapidly toward AI and conversational tools.
A few years ago, your website might have ranked well on Google thanks to keywords and backlinks. Today, AI platforms and voice assistants are sourcing information from structured, easy-to-understand content to provide instant, conversational responses.
That means if your law firm’s website is not optimised for AEO, potential clients may never see your answers, even if your traditional SEO is strong. Firms that adapt early are more likely to appear in AI-driven responses, knowledge panels, and snippets, gaining a crucial advantage in visibility and credibility.
How have search trends for legal help changed?
It is important to understand that how people search for legal information in 2025. Instead of typing “divorce lawyer near me” into Google, users might now ask:
“Hey Siri, who’s the best family lawyer near me?”
Or they’ll ask ChatGPT or Perplexity directly for legal advice summaries, firm recommendations, or answers to client questions.
This new behaviour requires a shift in how law firms create content for their websites and other online platforms. Rather than writing purely for search engines, firms must now write in a conversational language that aligns with natural speech patterns, i.e. the kind people use when talking to AI or smart devices.
The goal is to make your website content not just readable for humans, but understandable for machines.
How does AEO differ from traditional SEO?
While both SEO and AEO share the same goal, which is increasing your firm’s visibility, their methods are slightly different. Traditional SEO focuses on optimising web pages with keywords, backlinks, and on-page elements to rank in Google’s search results. SEO is largely about competing for space on the results page.
AEO, by contrast, focuses on providing clear, structured, and direct answers that AI tools and voice systems can interpret quickly. AEO is less about climbing rankings and more about being featured in conversational responses. Instead of optimising for clicks, AEO aims to position your firm as the trusted source that AI systems quote or summarise when providing information to users.
In essence, SEO helps people find your website, while AEO helps your expertise find people.
AEO prioritises things like structured data, schema markup, and content that’s written in a question-and-answer style. It’s less about tricking algorithms and more about structuring your content to ensure that it is easy for AI tools to interpret and quote accurately.
How to Optimise Your Law Firm Website for AEO
1. Answer client questions directly
The first step is to understand what your clients are asking. Build pages and blog posts around real questions you receive, for example:
- “What happens at a first family court hearing?”
- “Do I have to pay for conveyancing upfront?”
Providing concise, clear answers improves your chances of being featured in AI-generated responses.
2. Use structured data
Structured data is the code that helps search engines understand your website’s content. Adding schema markup tells AI tools what your content means, not just what it says. For example, tagging your business name, location, and practice areas in schema helps Google and AI systems identify you as a trusted legal source.
3. Create content in a conversational style
AI tools and voice devices prefer natural, human-like answers. It is for this reason that using conversational language helps your firm connect with users who search via voice or AI chat. Avoid jargon and write like you’re speaking directly to a client.
4. Include FAQs and how-to guides
Dedicated FAQ sections are gold for AEO because they mirror how users ask questions. Each question-answer pair can be picked up and quoted by AI-driven tools and voice assistants. For example, an FAQ titled “How long does a divorce take in England?” could appear directly as an AI snippet.
5. Optimise for multiple platforms
Your firm’s content shouldn’t just target Google. AI models such as ChatGPT and Perplexity also crawl indexed content to formulate their answers. Ensuring your firm’s content is accurate, regularly updated, and easily quotable increases your exposure across these platforms.
6. Make use of AI tools for marketing
Incorporate AI-driven analytics and tools to refine your marketing strategies. Use them to identify trending questions, content gaps, and areas where your firm can improve visibility. AI can also help you write drafts, generate ideas, and format text for AEO saving time while maintaining quality.
Why is Schema and structured data important?
Schema markup is the foundation of AEO. Embedding structured code in your website allows you to help AI systems understand your firm’s identity, expertise, and relevance.
For law firms, recommended schema types include:
- LegalService Schema – identifies your business as a legal service provider.
- FAQ Schema – marks up question-and-answer content.
- Article Schema – highlights blog posts and legal updates.
Implementing this structured data can help your firm’s content appear in rich snippets, voice answers, and AI summaries, which is the new front page of digital search.
Why is AEO the future of legal marketing
The move toward AI-powered answers is a major shift in legal marketing. Clients expect instant, trustworthy responses, and AEO gives law firms the tools to deliver them.
As AI-generated answers become more accurate, traditional search rankings may matter less than being quoted by AI itself. Investing in AEO now is about staying competitive and future-proofing your firm’s visibility.
Law firms that combine high-quality, conversational content with clear structure and schema markup will become the go-to sources for AI platforms, increasing both exposure and credibility.
How to get started
- Audit your current content for clarity and question relevance.
- Add schema markup and structured data to your site.
- Focus on writing in a natural, answer-based format.
- Track how often your content appears in AI-generated results.
If your firm isn’t yet optimised for AEO, now is the time to start. The firms that adapt early will secure a lasting advantage in the AI search era.

Stacey Horrocks is the Director of BSD Legal Marketing, a specialist digital marketing agency working exclusively with law firms and businesses across the legal sector.
Before moving into marketing, Stacey studied law and worked within the legal industry, including as a personal injury fee earner. That background has shaped the way she approaches legal marketing: understanding the law is important, but so is understanding the person on the other side of the search and what they actually need from a solicitor.
Since moving into legal marketing, Stacey has worked with law firms, barristers, legal costs specialists and other legal businesses across England and Wales. Her work covers SEO, PPC, content strategy, website optimisation and, increasingly, how firms can build visibility across AI-powered and generative search.
A large part of Stacey’s approach focuses on writing and marketing legal services from the client’s perspective. Potential clients don’t always know the correct legal terminology for the problem they are experiencing, and legal websites can easily become written for other lawyers rather than the people they are intended to attract. Stacey works with firms to understand the clients and work they actually want more of, how those clients search for help and what they need to see before they feel confident making an enquiry.
She also believes legal marketing should be measured beyond rankings and website traffic. Her focus is on whether SEO and wider digital marketing activity is attracting relevant potential clients, generating suitable enquiries and ultimately contributing to new instructions.
Through BSD Legal Marketing, Stacey combines her legal background with practical marketing experience to help legal businesses build a stronger online presence and generate sustainable growth.
