Why Your Best-Ranking Page Might Still Be Losing Clients

Ranking highly in Google is often treated as the ultimate measure of SEO success. A law firm sees one of its pages sitting at the top of the search results and assumes the hard work has been done. But a high-ranking page does not necessarily mean a high-performing page.

Your website may be attracting significant organic traffic while generating very few enquiries. In some cases, the page ranking highest for an important search term could actually be losing potential clients because the content, messaging or user experience fails to turn visitors into enquiries.

For law firms, where a single new client can be commercially valuable, this distinction matters.

Rankings are only part of the picture

Search rankings tell you where your page appears in Google. They do not tell you what happens after someone clicks on it. A page can rank highly because it is relevant to a particular search query, contains useful information and has strong authority behind it.

However, if visitors arrive and cannot quickly understand what the firm offers, why they should choose it or what they need to do next, that traffic may have little commercial value. The real objective is to attract the right people and encourage them to take the next step.

For a law firm, that could mean completing a contact form, calling the firm, requesting a consultation or making an initial enquiry.

The page may not match the visitor’s intent

One of the most common reasons a high-ranking page fails to generate enquiries is a mismatch between search intent and the content being presented. Consider someone searching for “employment solicitor for unfair dismissal”. They are likely looking for legal assistance.

If they land on a lengthy general article about employment law that provides useful information but does little to explain how the firm can help, they may leave and look elsewhere.

By contrast, a page that directly addresses unfair dismissal, explains the firm’s experience and provides a clear route to making an enquiry is much more likely to convert.

Your content might be informative but not persuasive

Legal content needs to demonstrate expertise, but there is a difference between providing information and persuading someone to instruct your firm. A page can explain a legal issue accurately without giving the reader any compelling reason to contact the firm behind it.

Potential clients often ask themselves:

  • Does this firm deal with cases like mine?
  • Do they understand my situation?
  • Can I trust them?
  • Are they experienced?
  • What happens if I contact them?
  • Is there a straightforward way to get started?

If the page does not answer these questions, another firm may receive the enquiry – even if your firm’s page ranks above theirs. Effective legal marketing needs to combine expertise with clear commercial messaging. The content should establish credibility while also making it obvious what the visitor should do next.

Don’t ignore the user experience

SEO and website design are often treated as separate disciplines, but they work together. A page can have excellent search visibility but still provide a poor user experience. Slow loading times, intrusive pop-ups, difficult navigation, unclear forms, and poor mobile usability can all create friction. Even smaller issues can affect whether someone makes an enquiry.

For example, a contact form asking for extensive information before someone has spoken to a solicitor may discourage potential clients from completing it. Similarly, a phone number that is difficult to find can result in lost enquiries from visitors who would rather speak to someone directly.

The journey from search result to enquiry should be as straightforward as possible.

legal marketing agency belfast

Stacey Horrocks is the Director of BSD Legal Marketing, a specialist digital marketing agency working exclusively with law firms and businesses across the legal sector.
Before moving into marketing, Stacey studied law and worked within the legal industry, including as a personal injury fee earner. That background has shaped the way she approaches legal marketing: understanding the law is important, but so is understanding the person on the other side of the search and what they actually need from a solicitor.
Since moving into legal marketing, Stacey has worked with law firms, barristers, legal costs specialists and other legal businesses across England and Wales. Her work covers SEO, PPC, content strategy, website optimisation and, increasingly, how firms can build visibility across AI-powered and generative search.
A large part of Stacey’s approach focuses on writing and marketing legal services from the client’s perspective. Potential clients don’t always know the correct legal terminology for the problem they are experiencing, and legal websites can easily become written for other lawyers rather than the people they are intended to attract. Stacey works with firms to understand the clients and work they actually want more of, how those clients search for help and what they need to see before they feel confident making an enquiry.
She also believes legal marketing should be measured beyond rankings and website traffic. Her focus is on whether SEO and wider digital marketing activity is attracting relevant potential clients, generating suitable enquiries and ultimately contributing to new instructions.
Through BSD Legal Marketing, Stacey combines her legal background with practical marketing experience to help legal businesses build a stronger online presence and generate sustainable growth.
